A Dhaka court today placed Desh TV Managing Director Arif Hasan on a two-day remand in a case filed over attempting to kill one Md Sajib in Airport area during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 19.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order after Investigation Officer Md Abu Sayeed, a sub-inspector of Airport Police Station, produced him before it with a three-day remand prayer.
In the remand prayer, the IO said the accused avoided giving the correct information about the case. So, he needs to find out whereabouts of FIR-named accused and other fugitives responsible for committing such offences.
While advocate Syed Zaynal Abedin Meshbah submitted an application, seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer on grounds that Arif was not present at the scene during the time of occurrence. He was implicated in the case just to harass him. Moreover, he is not involved with AL politics. So, he should be granted bail, said the defence.
According to the case statement, Md Sajib took part in the protest in Airport area around 5:00pm on July 19. When their procession reached in front of Uttara Scholastica School, Awami League and its front organisations attacked the procession with arms that left Sajib, and several others injured.
Soon after the incident, Sajib was rushed to Utrara Adhunik Hospital for treatment.
The victim’s father filed the case with Airport Police Station against 26 people, including Arif, after his arrest.
Police arrested Arif from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport when he was trying to go abroad last night, according to the police forwarding report placed before the court today.
Arif Hasan is the managing director of Desh TV and the general secretary of the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO).
Another Dhaka court in 2020 ordered the authorities to freeze 15 bank accounts of Arif Hasan and his firm “Hasan Telecom” due to suspicious transactions.
